Cultural Appropriation & Authentic Mexican Food

Ancient One

I've noticed a few chefs on television who have been very successful mainstream promoting authentic mexican cuisine, but on further observation I've discovered that these same chefs while profiting off of indigenous foods, receiving many cooking awards, starring in their own public television shows, selling many cookbooks piggybacking off of the old authentic mexican recipes, do not give any charitable donations to the mexican indigenous community which makes my blood boil.

What can the mexican people do to stop being taken advantage of by those who parasite off the indigenous using cultural appropriation to receive fame and fortune?

I've also realized that these same folks who do this will obviously use their voice and platforms heavily promoting themselves as the dominant group to claim a new direction and story. In other words the victor or the one who is most influential and publicly visible, yet foreign not a true descendant, can rewrite history and redirect indigenous contributions, indigenous vision in the world towards a place the indigenous may not even want to go.

I’ve seen this play out as well, but that’s not just in food.. it also plays out in many other parts of Mexican culture
