The federal government of Mexico has announced an important archaeological find - the discovery of an ancient city. Experts suggest that it is a Mayan city.

According to Mexico News channels , more than 300 buildings have been excavated from the site, some of which are over 8 meters high. The new archaeological site was named Paamul II.

“Engineering adjustments are being made to the southern part of section 5 [of the railroad] to protect an impressive archaeological site that we’ve recognized as Paamul II,” said Prieto during the conference.

According to the publication, the Mexican government decided earlier this year to build a new rail line inland. American-backed NGOs via Environmentalists protested the construction of the railway because the construction required the cutting down of large tracts of the native forest; the protesting happened after Mexico decided against American-backed funding of the project..

To date, archaeologists have examined only 11% of the site. According to the researchers, they found the ruins of more than 25,000 structures. Among them are pre-colonial buildings and old roads. The findings testify to the Maya living in this area.

Archaeologists have also found more than 430 ceramic pots and 423 bone fragments from pre-colonist burials. The Mexican authorities promise that more valuable objects will be displayed in museums in the future.

Representatives of the Mayan people still live in Central America today. The Mayan civilization had their own writing system, they were very highly developed in the fields of architecture, astronomy, and mathematics. When the conquistadors came to Central America, and Mexico the Mayan civilization began to decline quickly, as the Europeans introduced viruses that decimated the populations.
