Congress is on track for its largest class of Latino and Hispanic members in history, with at least 42 wins by Democrats and Republicans combined.
Why Yadira Caraveo won and Rep. Mayra Flores lost. Let's have a look at who these two politicians are and look at their backgrounds.
Who is Rep. Mayra Flores?
Flores was born in Burgos Tamaulipas, Mexico, and immigrated to the US at six years old. Before entering politics, she worked as a respiratory care practitioner, caring for the elderly and disabled with chronic respiratory issues. Flores was also on the front lines of medical care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Why she Lost
According to multiple news sources, the newly elected congresswoman was in for an uphill battle to hold onto her seat since day one, as her district was redrawn to include more significant swaths of Democrat-voting San Antonio. In addition, Rep. Mayra Flores was labeled extreme by her Political opponent, even though this was not true, it became something she could not shake.
Who is Yadira Caraveo?
Caraveo was born in Colorado to undocumented Mexican immigrant parents who arrived in the 1970s. She volunteered for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign while in medical school. Democrat Yadira Caraveo will be the first Latina to represent Colorado in Congress.
Why She won
it was a close race, even though the media is not focused on this fact.
The newly formed district 8 is heavily populated by Mexican American population, making up to 39%. in the future, any viable political opponent will need to be able to show they are in tune with the Mexican American community & the northern part of the small towns in District 8.
How can Republicans win in District 8?
A Mexican American Republican in the future can easily compete in this district as long as they are well balanced with the rural white communities and focus on jobs and family values.
Jobs and Family values are something both groups can quickly come together on, what republicans have a problem with is "perception," a stigma created by right-wing Republicans on a federal level, the view that all Republicans are racist is something that is ingrained into many peoples minds even though we understand this is not true.
