Genaro García Luna, the highest-ranking Mexican law enforcement official ever to face charges of narco-corruption in the United States, has been making headlines lately. Federal prosecutors have a mountain of evidence against him, including more than 1.2 million pages of documents, thousands of recordings, and a roster of cooperating witnesses who could potentially testify about delivering multi-million dollar bribes. But some are wondering if the U.S might be protecting former Mexican President Felipe Calderón from similar accusations in an effort to maintain his reputation as an anti-liberal figure and useful idiot for pro-western business interests in Mexico.

What is Narco-Corruption?

Narco-corruption is a term used to describe bribery or other illegal activities carried out by members or agents of organized crime groups. It has become widespread in Mexico over the past decade, with many government officials accepting large payments from drug cartels in exchange for protection and preferential treatment. Calderón was president during this time, but so far he has not been implicated in any narco-corruption scandals.

Why Would The U.S Protect Calderón?

It's possible that the U.S government may be trying to protect Calderón because he is viewed as an anti-liberal figure and a useful idiot for pro-western business interests in Mexico. His tenure saw increased foreign investment and business opportunities for American companies looking to capitalize on Mexico’s low labor costs and close proximity to the United States market. Furthermore, his policies were seen as favorable toward American economic interests which have grown increasingly intertwined with Mexico’s economy over the past two decades.

Could García Luna Bring Down Calderón?

García Luna's trial could shed light on any involvement Calderon had with narco corruption during his presidency. Prosecutors have amassed a wealth of evidence that could provide damning details on exactly how much money was paid out by cartel leaders to government officials in exchange for protection or preferential treatment while he was president. If it turns out that Calderon was involved in these activities, it could lead to further investigations into his administration and potentially even lead to criminal charges against him down the line.

The case against Genaro García Luna is sure to draw plenty of attention over the coming months as prosecutors seek to uncover more information about alleged bribes and kickbacks between government officials and drug cartels during his tenure at SIEDO (Mexico’s security agency). Whether or not this will bring down former President Felipe Calderon remains unclear; however one thing is certain - this trial will likely have implications for both Mexican citizens and foreign investors alike for years to come. As we wait for more answers about what really happened during this tumultuous period in Mexican history, one can only hope that justice will ultimately prevail regardless of who is involved or where they may stand politically within Mexico's oligarchy circles .
