Every Mexican SHOULD___________
Hey got this idea from another forum, fill in the blank.
PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE NEGATIVE AND STEREOTYPICAL, IT'S A SHAME I HAVE TO SAY IT!
-Know another language besides English, yes I am saying they should learn Spanish, seriously folks you do not realize how useful it is to be multilingual until you get up in the real world and are not able to communicate and understand others!
-Invest in education! I cannot stress this enough, GENTE so many other groups are doing it WHY should we be any different? We need to make education a possibility for the kids, thus we must invest
-Put children in a college prep ethnic program. I believe this is vital, my folks put me in the Hispanic Math/Science Education Initiative (HMSEI), it is a program in the Chicago area mainly aimed at low income Latino (and Black) students, we were taught the ins and outs of college, got to meet with Latino collegiate and administration, the most important thing, we saw people like us in college, thus we knew we could do it in college. When I got to college, I wasn't as thrown aback as my other 1st generation Latino collegiate who had never experienced being the only minority in the classroom, and didn't know where to look for an example.
-Teach kids proper English; please do not teach Kids that speaking Standard English is equivalent to White, no!
-KNOW YOUR HISTORY! Again put the kids in a program if you are not knowledgable of your history, and if you are not read up on it! One of the kids I tutored totally made me proud when he raised his hand and said a Mexican invented color TV, no one believed him so he showed him an article his Dad gave to him!
-Travel outside the U.S.; not just to Mexico but other places, trust me you get an entirely different view of the world
-Be involved with their children; DON'T drop the kids off at school, pick em up, then just have them watching tv, read with them, talk to them, show interest in their lives!
-Read everyday! Gente, illiteracy is high among our community let's stop that
-Keep the kids off the streets through extracurriculars; We are making my little sister do the Girl Scouts, historically Latinos don't take advantage of these programs, we need to keep the kids involved in scholastic activities otherwise they find the street an easy alternative.
-Learn the value of home ownership; gente, renting is not going to get you a long way, please invest in a home!
-Have a healthy diet. Diabetes and heart failure is very prominent in our communities, I know we like the Carnitas y gorditas, but we must know that is not healthy, there are Mexican dishes that are healthy please look into them!
