Mexico’s Congress is set to vote on a constitutional energy reform promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that would undo much of the Neoliberal market opening in electrical power carried out by his predecessor.
Many of those past reforms were done under the guise of free-market reforms. Still, they ended up benefiting only a select few foreign corporations at the expense of Mexico's energy independence. Those previous reforms helped create a Government sanctioned monopoly, and it wasn't helping Mexico's overall energy needs. Those corporations received preferential treatment in pricing and purchasing and didn't have to pay the state-owned utility.
Unsurprisingly American politicians looking out for big electricity corporations have decided to help those companies and started to put pressure on the Mexican Government, even threatening those politicians that vote in favor of energy reforms with personal sanctions and visa restrictions.
