Two Canadians died of gunshot wounds after an argument turned violent at a resort near Cancun on Mexico's Caribbean coast, authorities said on Friday.

Both of dead guests at the upscale resort Hotel Xcaret on the Riviera Maya of Quintana Roo state had criminal records, said Mexican officials, citing information from the Canadian police. Mexican police are searching for another person thought to have fired the shots who had a "long" criminal record in Canada, said the attorney general's office in Quintana Roo.

Update: The alleged gunman has been identified by Mexican media as a known criminal who goes by the pseudonym “El Sureño”—The Southerner. El Sureño remains on the lam, along with an alleged accomplice who provided him with the murder weapon.

The investigations indicate that this attack was motivated by debts that arose from transnational illegal activities that the victims participated in,” said Quintana Roo State Prosecutor Óscar Montes de Oca at a news conference.
