FORT MYERS - Lee County Sheriff's deputies have charged a 25-year-old Fort Myers man in three counts of hate crimes against two Hispanic men.
Authorities say Miguel Herrera, 26, was riding his bike Monday afternoon when a red car driven by Roger Joseph Ruel tried to hit him at a high rate of speed. Herrera says he narrowly avoided being hit and that Ruel then began to yell at him and threatened to kill him because he was Mexican.
Herrera told police that Ruel then got out of the car and attacked him with a collapsible baton, which Herrera fended off with his bike before Ruel retrieved a knife and began slashing the tires.
Herrera's brother ran up and helped, knocking Ruel down with his own bike. Ruel fled, say police, but not before a witness wrote down his tag number.
