Mexico’s Supreme Court struck down part of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s ‘jail, no bail’ policy Thursday.

The court voted against mandatory pre-trial detention for people accused of fraud, smuggling or tax evasion. Because trials often take years in Mexico, the justices argued that being held in prison during trial was equivalent to being subjected to punishment before being convicted.

Today Many Drug traffickers are charged with smuggling or tax evasion, this new requirement means more Drug trackers will be set free.

Mexico’s Supreme Court has in the past been accused of favoring criminals over the greater good of the people, this news will now serve to solidify that point.

The Supreme Court is made up of individuals selected by former corrupt Presidents, so it's not surprising they would do this, it's just sad that in 2022 this is still happening.
