Mexico is America's first line of defense concerning immigration and homeland security, although most of the time, American right-wing politicians like to score political points by bashing that country; behind the scenes, the two governments are in constant contact regarding border security.

This week Mexico said it detained more than 16,000 migrants in four days, including nearly 5,000 Venezuelans, the country's National Institute of Migration (INM).

Mexico's INM said 16,096 migrants from 46 countries were detained in 22 states between November 17 and 20.

Most of the immigrants were from South America are from countries the U.S. government imposed economic sanctions on. So unsurprisingly, a country like Venezuela, which is bearing the worst U.S. sanctions, is seeing its population look for better opportunities abroad.

The Mexican government said migrants from Central and South American countries included 4,968 Venezuelans, 2,987 Guatemalans, 1,385 Nicaraguans, 1,311 Hondurans, and 1,285 Ecuadorians.
