For too long, Mexico has been too reliant on the U.S. for trade. This reliance has often resulted in lopsided trade deals that have hurt Mexico’s economy. However, the recent shift by the U.S. towards protectionism and its disregard for bilateral relations have pushed Mexico towards looking for better trade partners. In this post, we will explore why Mexico should focus more on Asia for trade and the benefits it can reap.

1. Economic Growth

Asia is one of the fastest-growing regions in terms of economic growth, with countries like China, Japan, and South Korea leading the charge. Focusing on Asia could provide Mexico with access to new markets, investors, and technology that are essential for economic growth. Also of note is that Asia is home to over 4.5 billion people and represents as an excellent opportunity for Mexican businesses looking to expand their reach.

2. Diversification of Trade Partners

Relying solely on one trade partner can lead to economic uncertainty, as we have seen recently with the U.S. Not surprisingly, many experts argue that diversifying trade partners can help protect a country’s interests and provide more stability. By steering towards Asia, Mexico can achieve this diversification and establish new, untapped markets.

3. Lower Tariffs

In recent times, the U.S. has levied new tariffs on Mexican goods, with the most notable being on steel and aluminum. Such tariffs can have a significant impact on exports and the country’s economy overall. On the other hand, many Asian countries, such as China, Japan, and South Korea, have shown willingness to negotiate lower tariffs. Given this, shifting to Asia could eliminate the tariff issue for Mexico in the long run and ultimately contribute to reducing the country’s trade deficit.

4. Building Stronger Alliances

As Mexico's relations with the U.S. continue to sour, building stronger alliances with Asia could help Mexico achieve its long-term goals. By providing easier access to new markets, new technology, and newer investors, Mexico can create meaningful bonds and growth opportunities with the region's countries. Additionally, as China continues to challenge the U.S. economic dominance in the world, aligning with it could provide a counterbalance to the U.S. policies that harm Mexican interests.

In conclusion, shifting the focus to Asia could be a positive step for Mexico. Lower tariffs, economic growth, diversification of trade partners, and stronger alliances are all benefits that could accrue from a pivot to the East. As Mexico comes to terms with the U.S. increasingly hostile behavior, it must take the necessary steps to ensure a stable economic future. Moving away from reliance on the U.S. and seeking out new connections in Asia could well be one solution. As truckers who stand to benefit from such forward-thinking policies, let us hope that Mexico continues its path towards prosperity.
