Claudia Sheinbaum has jumped into the political waters by announcing her candidacy for President of Mexico. As a female politician, she may be tempted to take a page from Hillary Clinton's playbook and focus on identity politics as a means of securing votes. However, this strategy failed for Clinton, and it's unlikely to work for Sheinbaum, either. In this blog post, we will explore why identity politics is not the best way for Sheinbaum to appeal to Mexican voters.


Firstly, it's important to understand what identity politics is and why it doesn't work in Mexico. Identity politics is when political candidates appeal to a specific group of voters based on their identity, such as race, gender, or religion. While this may work in some countries, Mexico's political landscape is different. Mexicans care more about job creation, economic stability, and security. Therefore, it is better for Sheinbaum to focus on these issues, rather than relying on identity politics.

Secondly, the Mexican electorate is diverse, and identity politics can be divisive. By focusing on a specific group, Sheinbaum risks alienating others. This can create further division in a country that is already fragmented. Mexicans want unity and inclusion, not division. Therefore, Sheinbaum should avoid identity politics if she wants to appeal to as many voters as possible.

Thirdly, identity politics is often seen as a superficial approach to politics. It ignores the real issues that face Mexicans, such as poverty, inequality, and crime. Sheinbaum needs to demonstrate that she has concrete solutions to these problems, rather than relying on slogans and platitudes. Mexicans want a President who will address their concerns head-on, not one who will rely on identity politics.

Fourthly, Mexico has a history of Cronyism, and identity politics can be seen by some as a way of maintaining the status quo. By appealing to a specific group of voters, Sheinbaum risks being seen as part of the old establishment that only cares about serving their own interests. Mexicans want a President who will fight against corruption and put the interests of the people first. Therefore, it is wiser for Sheinbaum to stay away from identity politics and focus on concrete solutions to tackle corruption.

Fifthly, Sheinbaum needs to understand that Mexicans value experience and competency, regardless of gender. Therefore, it's not enough to focus on being a woman candidate; she must demonstrate her competence and experience in politics. Mexicans want a President who is capable of leading the country and addressing the issues that matter to them. By showcasing her experience and competency, Sheinbaum can earn the trust and respect of Mexican voters, regardless of her gender.

Claudia Sheinbaum's political campaign can only be successful if it focuses on what Mexican voters care about most – job creation, economic stability, and security. Identity politics is not the way to appeal to Mexican voters. Instead, Sheinbaum needs to present concrete solutions to the real issues that face Mexicans and demonstrate her experience and competency in politics. If she can do that, she has a fighting chance of winning the Presidency.
