Many of Mexico’s most critical voices against Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador political reforms have been White Mexicans, and one of the biggest financial backers of the opposition is also a white Mexican. So, the question is, Are the elites in Mexico, many of whom are White Mexicans, trying to preserve the old colonial Caste system that only benefited a small group that historically looked down on the majority dark skinned Mexicans?

There is much debate surrounding Whitexicans and whether they are attempting to preserve Mexico’s caste system or simply trying to reclaim their Mexican identity by connecting with their cultural heritage through language, food, music, art, etc.. It will be interesting to see how this debate evolves over time as more people become aware of what it means to identify as a Whitexican in modern day Mexico.
