The Mexican alligator lizard, or green arboreal alligator lizard, is an endangered species of lizard that is endemic to the highlands of Mexico in Sierra Madre de Oaxaca.

Being a unique species found only here, this species can be found particularly in the Mexican states of Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca. This distinct species is typically recognized by its striped markings along its head and neck that lead to a spotted band down its back and tail. Mexican alligator lizards are incredibly impressive adaptors with incredibly strong legs meant for climbing trees.

They are also great swimmers who like pursuing aquatic prey near rivers or ponds. Mexican alligators lizards have lived harmoniously in this area for hundreds of years, however their population numbers have recently decreased due to urban development and deforestation. It’s imperative we work to protect their natural environment if these charming Mexican natives are going to remain survivors for many more years to come.
