Mexico is an incredibly complex country, with a long and tumultuous history. From the Spanish Conquest to the Mexican Revolution and beyond, Mexican politics has been shaped by a diverse array of forces. Let’s take a look at the present state of political affairs in this vibrant nation.
Political Parties in Mexico
Mexico has a multi-party system, meaning there are several parties vying for influence. The two most powerful are the National Action Party (PAN) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). The PAN is center-right, advocating for free market policies and religious conservatism. On the other hand, PRI is center-left and tends to favor government intervention in economic policy as well as secularism. Other major players include MORENA (National Regeneration Movement), which is left-wing populism with a economic conservativism, and PVEM (Green Ecological Party of Mexico), which focuses on environmentalism.
The President of Mexico
The President of Mexico is elected by popular vote every six years with no possibility for reelection. As President, they serve as both head of state and head of government. They are responsible for appointing cabinet ministers, signing laws passed by Congress into effect, issuing executive orders regarding matters such as foreign relations and national security, among other things. The current president is Andrés Manuel López Obrador from MORENA who was sworn into office in December 2018 after winning with 53% of the vote in July 2017 elections.
The Legislative Branch
The legislative branch consists of two chambers—the Senate (upper house) and Chamber of Deputies (lower house). The Senate has 128 members that serve six-year terms while the Chamber has 500 deputy members that serve three-year terms. Both chambers must approve legislation before it can be signed into law by the President. Currently, MORENA holds a majority in both houses with 296 seats combined out of 600 total seats available between them.
